Peruvians on Wednesday celebrated their under-17 soccer team's victory over Tajikistan in the youth World Cup which is under way in South Korea.

Even in the earthquake-hit cities of Canete, Pisco and Ica, Peruvians stayed up to watch the game, played in the afternoon on the South Korean island of Jiju: the early morning in Peru.

Peru defeated Tajikistan 5-4 on penalties, progressing through to the quarterfinals. The teams had tied 1-1 during 100 minutes of normal play.

Peru had scored the first goal after 12 minutes via forward Reimond Manco, while Tajikistan equalized in minute 15 via Davronov.

"We are pleased because we have made Peruvians very happy," coach Juan Jose Ore told a Peruvian radio station by telephone. "We are pleased to be in the world's top eight."

Drivers went out onto the streets despite the bitter cold of a winter morning in Lima, and blasted their horns.

It is the first time a Peruvian team reach the quarterfinals of any soccer tournament.

The team's next game is against African squad Ghana, which defeated Brazil 1-0 to qualify.
