Kaleidoscope based on Waterfall, by M. C. Escher. Lithograph, 1961. Escher,
a 20th century Dutch artist famous for his etchings and illustrations, uses
painstaking perspective and geometry to create his art - challenging the
viewer to second guess what is physically possible.
In the lithograph "Waterfall," the artist
demonstrates how our vision can play tricks on us. It shows an
apparent paradox where water from the base of a waterfall appears to run
downhill before reaching the top of the waterfall.
